Unit Desain Kapal didirikan pada tahun 2021 dan merupakan unit dari Politeknik Kelautan dan Perikanan Sorong dibawah Kewadiran Satu. Unit Desain Kapal memiliki misi untuk memajukan pengetahuan dan penelitian tentang desain, kinerja, dan operasi kapal. Penelitian dan proyek yang dilakukan oleh anggota Lab adalah di bidang desain kapal, stabilitas, hidrodinamika, struktur, dan optimasi.
